The Amazing Story of Leicester

As an alumnus of the University of Leicester, I was rooting for Leicester Football Club. A lifelong fan of Liverpool Football Club, this year, I started rooting for Leicester just as I had rooted for President Obama few years ago. I guess being an underdog all my life gets me rooting for underdogs. While we were searching for a tag line for my last book The Global Journey of an Asian we settled on the tag line: The Entrepreneurial Journey of a complete outsider.  Leicester City were complete outsiders. They assembled their team for a fraction of the cost of what other leading teams did. We just need to reinvent ourselves all the time. There is no doubt that Leicester City’s amazing success will go down in history as one of the world’s most spectacular sporting miracles. As Kenneth Raj Samuel writes in his Leadernomics column “What Leicester City has accomplished this season was totally unprecedented and has everyone in the football and non-football fraternity talking about this underdog win against the other Goliath teams.”  The article sums up some valuable key points for all of us:

1. Team Work

2. Reward your people, creatively

3. Splash the cash, wisely

4. Divine intervention, but do your part too

5. Parting thought

The best teams are made up of a bunch of nobodies who love everybody and serve anybody and don’t care about becoming a somebody. – Phil Dooley
