Keeping Workers Engaged for Successful Organisations

Engaged employees lead an organisation to greatness resulting in engaged customers who are fanatical to the point that they await every new release of a product. Take Apple computers for instance; their massive turnaround despite numerous follies has been largely due to an engaged workforce. Engaged people are value creators, truly committed to their job, organisation and career. They look beyond a 9 to 5 paradigm. Peter Ong from the Gallup organisation states that based on their research, engaged work teams across the world are 1.7 times more productive than those who are not? Their poll showed that for every one engaged employee there were two disengaged employees. Gallup estimates that the annual economic prize for Singapore to turn these disengaged into engaged are about $6 billion. The 29th Asia HRD Congress at Jakarta addresses some of these issues. SMART Employees: SUCCESSFUL Organizations

Creating Successful Organisations take centre stage at the 29th Asia HRD Congress Conference & Exhibition with the theme - SMART Employees: SUCCESSFUL Organizations; address issues that are critical for HRD professionals today. Organizations place a premium on attracting, developing and retaining smart people as they very well recognize the importance of having a smart workforce. Professor Howard Gardner highlighted to us that smartness can no longer be confined to a single measure of intelligence. Maths, logic, word, intrapersonal, interpersonal, body, visual, musical and spatial smarts recognize the importance and criticality of multiple intelligences and diversity.

Outstanding leaders such as Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, former Prime Minster of Malaysia, Brad Tonini from Australia and the legendary Ed Scannel from the United States of America will present their cutting edge views to the 800+ audience from over 31 countries. Please visit www.hrdcongress.com to register and avail of the special discounts. You will be surprised with the special prices that include accommodation, air travel and conference registration.

Delegation discounts are available with haniffah@hrdcongress.com. In the event you want to nominate outstanding professionals for the Asia HRD Congress Awards, please click here.
Creativity and Innovation

My book reading for January was a very interesting book - The Apple Way - 12 Management Lessons from the World’s Most Innovative Company. Jeffrey L. Cruickshank describes how Apple has been able to develop a creative and innovative culture, one competency that has allowed the company to reinvent itself several times despite the onslaught of Microsoft and Windows and its own follies. The book describes how Apple has been a forerunner in revolutionizing the computer industry and now the consumer electronics industry. With more than millions of ipods sold, an unprecedented 250% stock value increase in just one year and a net income increase of 530%, no one can dispute the value of engaged employees as well as the benefits of having the Creative and Innovative Competency institutionalized within the company.

On the Training front, Karen and team have started our Certificate in Training Practice, the 2006 run. The first Accredited Competency Programme and Accredited Trainer Programme also have started. On the consulting front, Subra, Zainal and team have just about completed all the 2005 major competency initiatives while starting on several new ones. Murali and team continue to work on HRDPower.net Version Two.

Personally, I have been keeping up to my gym routine. I did work with some outstanding clients during January - Singapore Airlines, Petronas Management Training, Suria Capital and BP Plastics. With my writing and R & D work very much on, I have been increasingly finding it difficult to find more time for Training & Consulting. As it is my schedules are punishing though I must admit I still try and manage to find the elusive work: life balance somehow. I will be in touch in a month with the March e-news.

Palan
