Welcome to the 2013 September E-News! Here in Malaysia we have just celebrated our 50th National Day, while we have been busy at SMR Group with a number of projects and also planning for the coming year. Personally, it’s been a full month too as among all else I had the opportunity to see the former President of the Philippines His Excellency Fidel V. Ramos – ahead of bringing out my next book…

    Learning & Performing

    With some of my SMR colleagues and family members, I was lucky enough to catch a session with Nick Vujicic in KL last month. A truly inspiring figure and someone who has brought about great change in this world. You can find out more at http://www.lifewithoutlimbs.org/, but his story really needs no introduction these days as he is so effective at getting his message across wherever he goes. He is an amazing communicator, and I could not help but observe how he kept it fresh and impactful while leading a session he has undoubtedly delivered hundreds of times before across the world. As a regular motivational speaker myself, it is always good to watch others in action. If you’ve never been to one of Nick’s sessions, make the effort.     Talent & Competency
    A recent ILM article caught my attention about nurturing high fliers without disrupting your team - https://www.i-l-m.com/Insight/Edge/2013/September/managing-high-fliers. Research shows that we spend the most time with our high potentials (and also with our lowest performers) while often neglecting those in between. In part, this led us at SMR to develop our ‘Leading B Players’ leadership course a while back. As with all human capital initiatives, the article underlines the importance of transparency and consistency in identifying your high potentials. The more successful you are at attaining these elements, the less danger you will have of an ‘us and them’ scenario or of reduced engagement among those not identified as HIPOs.     Leadership & Innovation
    We have just had the pleasure of hosting two top-level seminars by the Harvard Business School leadership guru Professor Boris Groysberg. The first was a three-day Leadership Forum for Malaysian Small and Medium Enterprises, while the second was a more intimate RoundTable event down in Port Dickson. Boris is an exceptional thinker, and through relevant business cases and his own research, he sparked a lot of interesting debate about talent management both from a global and a Malaysian perspective. Aside from leadership best practices, a lot of his work centres on the portability of talent – how stars in one organisation often struggle in other organisations as so much of their performance is attributable to the surrounding structure, processes, culture and networks. A good example of systems thinking and how our organizational structures are often the most significant contributor to business success. Boris is also a prolific writer, with a number of books and articles to his name.
