Dear Learn & Perform subscriber:

Greetings.  May 2018 will be etched in my memory for a long time. The Malaysian elections produced a momentous change. The party that had ruled Malaysia for 60 over years lost power to a former Premier, 92-year-old Tun Dr Mahathir. And, I was busy travelling to three continents for three graduations. Additionally, I learned the concept of being ‘gentrified’.

Let us cover in the May e news:

  • The Malaysian Elections
  • Three Graduations Three Continents Three experiences
  • Being Gentrified
  • Four City E-MBA Programme at Asia Metropolitan University (AMU)
  • Becoming a Doctor/Pharmacist at Cyberjaya University College of Medical Sciences (CUCMS)

The Malaysian Elections

May 9th I must say it was a historic night for Malaysia. No last-minute attempts to change the outcomes at the ballot box prevailed. The will of the people reigned supreme. It was not about race or religion. It was about the choice of people. It was about the mood for change – recognising and anticipating it. It is something most politicians miss reading as one can see in electoral history. The ‘Yes You Can’ campaign of Obama proved how a campaign can build momentum and resonate with people. It was truly a people’s revolution that overcame the narrow political agenda, in the recent Malaysian elections. Thank God it was a peaceful revolution through the ballot box and we must salute everyone for a peaceful transition of power.

It also clearly showed there was no age barrier to love your country or hope for the best. The country has now put tremendous faith going beyond race and religion to choose a 92-year-old leader Tun Dr Mahathir to turn around the country. Yet, one cannot forget in this euphoria, the sacrifices made by Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, the former Deputy Prime Minister who was sacked and humiliated three years ago. As Tun Dr Mahathir’s election director, he saw through the team going past the winning post. Not to forget the others from all the other parties including the incarcerated Anwar Ibrahim and family, Lim Kit Siang and Mat Sabu. And, also, the courage of the countless number of others who we may forget to name but were brave enough to stand up and fight what they thought was right. After all, was there not a famous saying: All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. There was a unity of purpose in removing the government. Moving forward, this has to be replaced with removing the past government to serving the people in line with people’s aspirations. Three Graduations Three Continents Three Experiences

It was a true learning journey. Attending three graduations in three different continents. Each was a different experience. Unique in its own way. My younger son Andy graduated from the University of California Berkeley, USA with a undergraduate degree in Applied Mathematics. My eldest son Maha graduated from Imperial College, UK with a MSC in Risk and Financial Engineering. And, I graduated with another PhD, in Education from Federation University, Ballarat, Australia. Learning is exciting, but one can only do that with the support of friends and family which we were blessed to have. Being Gentrified

While we were at San Francisco my sons were talking to me about some neighbourhoods getting gentrified. For some reasons I had not come across that term. And the latest Harvard Business Review talks about it. Using modern digital tools, Prof Michael Luca and colleagues such as doctoral student Hyunjun Kim talk about gentrification as it is happening. A new study of gentrification shows that the addition of a coffee shop or restaurant in a neighbourhood could be an early indicator that housing prices are about to spike. Gentrification has swept through some of America’s largest cities, including San Francisco, Manhattan, and New Orleans. With it comes familiar arguments both for and against. The research also casts some doubt on the often-expressed belief that gentrification can ruin neighbourhoods by forcing out existing businesses that serve the needs of the locals. Although the study helps identify where gentrification is occurring, it’s unclear what’s causing what. Either way, a new Starbucks, they say, is a predictor of rising housing prices. “If you want to know if a neighbourhood is going to be booming in terms of housing prices, the hip new coffee shop may be a harbinger of things to come.” When a neighbourhood starts looking better – landscaping and paint on the buildings, it is one of the first indications of a neighbourhood change.
